INTERVIEW - Latifa Tee

Latifa Tee may have missed out on X-Factor in the group category, however she is stepping out solo with her new single Games and she has something to prove...
You may recognise Ms Tee from the reality TV show when she was in urban vocal group Straight Up. Though the band didn't make it through to finals of the show, Latifa knew the pop life was for her and didn't wait to play any Games (see what we did there!) and went solo. Well, we caught up with the singer for a natter on life post X-Factor, flying solo and how she is certainly taking the pop charts by the b*alls with her new infectious single. It's the SnapCacklePop interview with Letifa Tee..!

Welcome to SnapCacklePop Letifa, how are you?
I'm very well thank you. I'm very excited to be here.

And you are back in Sydney after being in LA recently...
Yeah I've been backward and forword between here and LA. I haven't had much time to check out LA yet as I've been in and out of studio's when I'm there. That said, I love LA for the music industry and being able to record music with such incredible producers.

Who have you been recording with?
I've been recording with so many producers, who are all very talent and have many Grammy's between them.

Did you manage to steal a Grammy from one of their houses?
I WISH! I was actually in town when the Grammy's were on, so it was pretty hectic in LA. And even though I had an invite to the party, I had to finish a song, so missed it.

Wow, that is dedication. We would of gone for the free booze!??!
Well I'm not old enough to drink in LA, so prefer to work on my music and one day walk away with an award myself.

Before we get to your new single Games, lets go back to when you were in Straight Up and how it compares to being a solo artist?
Well I loved the whole X-Factor / Straight Up experience as it taught me so much about myself and how I approach my work. Now I'm working as a solo artist, I've really been able to find my strength, in my music and recordings. It's been fun as a solo artist, even though not having those crazy boys around. [Laughs] We are still friends and all very good still.

So basically you prefer to be flying solo?
[Laughs] No, I love the boys, I do, however now I'm on my own, I need to take things more seriously than when I was in a group. C'mon, I was with three boys who loved to have fun.

So lets get on your new single Games?
It's so good to finally release it here in Australia. After doing so well on radio in LA, to be able to release in my home country is amazing. The lyrics and the story of the track really relate to me, as its about a ex pop-crush, ex-relelationship I had been in, and those moments when you hear a song that take you back to that time in the relationship.

So who was the pop crush on?
It wasn't really pop crush, just someone I saw for a while, I really drew on that experience for the song.

You have quite a musical family don't you?
I DO actually!! My dad was a DJ and still does it now and again, but he brought me up on some very cool old school R&B and soul music. My favourite artists of that time are like Aaliyah and Lauren Hill. Very old school influence.

That does show through this new single...
To be able make music that I grew up listening too is just a dream for me. I like to stick to my roots.

What is next for you then?
Well I'm releasing the music video for Games and then I have a stack of new music ready to release, that I can't wait to share it with my fans. I am not sure if it will end up on an EP or album yet, however I can tell you to expect something early next year.

So on a slightly separate note, we hear you are doing something with Timomatic?
Yeah we both are working with the Australian Children's Music Foundations. They announced their national song writing competition and Tim and I are Youth Ambassadors for the program. We've been creating awareness of the program and supporting them with time. Tomorrow we actually go along an judge a talent competition at a school. All pretty cool.

So X-Factor is back on our TV at the minute, so we have to ask, would you go back on?
I really appreciated the experience and was one of the best times of my life, however my life right now is about me releasing my own music.

So to end our chat today, here are our top 5 questions this week..
Game on...

Who do you have a secret pop crush on?
I have a crush on Calum from 5 Seconds of Summer

What is your favourite reality TV show?
It has to be Big Brother.

If you had a super power, what power would you have and why?
I would definitely choose flying. Just to be able to fly to LA whenever I wanted.
So much fun.

What would you wear as a super hero?
A cap with lots of sequins. [Laughs]

If you were abandoned on a desert island what three things would you take with you?
My ipod, my family... can I bring them all as one?

Well, how many of them are you bringing?
My mum, my dad, my nan and my brother.

Ok go on then.
And also unlimited supply of pizza.

Last question, if were to take you out on a romantic date. Where would you like us to take you?
Well I've never been on a date, so it would be my first.

Awwwwww. So cute. OK, SCP will take you on a date next time we catch up, where can we take you?
Well dinner and a movie sounds good.

Done deal. As long as its not a horror movie!
No, I'm more a comedy kinda a girl.

Phew, we hate horror! Latifa, it has been a pleasure. Good luck with your single and can't wait for your new EP or album in the new year.
Thanks SCP team. Much love.
