Album Review - Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour

It has been one of the most highly anticipated albums in the SCP office history, every since we discovered Sam Smith early in 2013 and his performance of Lay Me Down and we crowned his our One To Watch in our SCP Music Awards. So does the Brits Critics choice winner's debut album In The Lonely Hour deserve our continued praise...

How do we begin with this album? It's beautiful, emotional (yes we cried), it's mature, it has depth yet its accessible to everyone, it's radio friendly, it has talent just hanging off every note that Sam Smith sings and every song draws us into lyrics of secret unrequited love.

For those of you who have not been reading SnapCacklePop for the last few years ( shame on you! ) we at LOVE Sam Smith at SCP HQ, for having such passion, rawness and emotion that is reflected in all the singles we have listened to over the years. From debut Lay Me Down, the certified gold  Stay With Me, the up tempo Money On My Mind, the brilliant Naughty Boy track La La La and even the phenomenal Disclosure track Latch which all feature on the deluxe version of the album.

After winning the BRITs Critic Choice Award in late 2013, the 21 year old's fate appeared sealed and he was to become the voice of 2014. This record showcases his talent, with songs of Smith’s pain of being mugged in Good Thing and broken hearts and desire in recent single Leave Your Lover. His voice just melts us with his neo-R&B, soulful pop sound. That growl in his voice sends shivers down our spine and then there is the vulnerability to Smith’s tracks.

There is not much change of tempo throughout, however the album reminds us of fellow Brits Choice winner Emeli Sandé's debut Our Version Of Events as it is believable, from a place of truth and connects to it’s audience. He delivers songs with such conviction and power, full of explosive emotional statements mixed with rocket-powered hooks and gospel choirs.

We won’t go on, as YOU just need to hear this album for yourself. Mr Smith, we’ve loved you for years and this album proves why we made you our One To Watch this year. Bravo sir..!
