Taylor Swift reaches a new Pinnacle..!

Whether or not you're a fan of country music, the annual CMA awards never fail to entertain. Besides the great live music, they're often hilarious (sometimes unintentionally so) and they mark country music's official stance on everything. Which makes what they did to Taylor Swift this year rather surprising and definitely important...

When Taylor Swift first began, being her fan likely meant you were a 10 year old girl in Alabama. A year or two later it seemed okay for any teenager in the southern United States to like her. And when she started winning country awards by the tractor-ful, it was okay for any fan of country music to sing along to her love stories.

...but then pop music discovered her, and the entire world took notice. People in Iceland starting liking her. Our grandmothers starting liking her. Even our snobby indie music friends began appreciating her on some level (and they hate everything). But in the world of country music, that kinda popularity is often the kiss of death.

Country music has historically gotten angry and resentful when their darlings are embraced by the world. We heard Shania Twain was attacked by the staff of the Grand Ole Opry once. Okay, that's not true, but we wouldn't have blinked if we read that back in 2001.

And inevitably, pop music gets over 90% of acts within a few years. So for country to pop crossover stars, this usually means they don't have a home to go back to should their worldwide flame burn out. Which is why the CMA awards were so important this year.

At the height of her worldwide pop success, country legends including Faith Hill, Keith Urban, and George Strait (who we never imagined would be a Taylor fan) gathered on stage to give Tay-Tay the Pinnacle Award. Fellow legends Alison Krauss and Vince Gill joined her for a beautiful rendition of Red. And CMA interviewed pop culture megastars Justin Timberlake, Julia Roberts, and Ellen Degeneres for the package.

This combination of country music icons and worldwide celebrities sent a message to the world. "We love Taylor. We're where she started, but we're happy to share her, and she'll always have a place with us". Taylor's not the 1st country act to achieve this level of fame, but she is the 1st to have this amount of country cred while she's the darling of the world...

...and she deserves it.

As the award package pointed out, girl has written every song on every album she's released. She plays instruments and sings live on her sold-out tours. And she connects with fans in a story-telling way that's rare in this day and age. Get it gurl.

If you had any shame at all in your love of Ms. Swift, rest assured you can now publicly proclaim your love for her with no fear of country music fans berating you. If you're one of the 29 people worldwide who haven't downloaded her amazing current album, Red, you can do so at iTunes. You can also enjoy the CMA tribute below. And no one will judge you. Not even George Strait..!
