New Album Review - Oh Land - Wishbone

Danish alternative pop singer Oh Land sometimes flies under the radar, however that’s never a bad thing to appear to a niche market, yet will her new album Wish Bone change that…

Following up her 2011 self-titled album, that contained great hits Sun of a Gun and White Nights, Oh Land is back with more alternative electronic pop. Readers who have not heard of Oh Land, should understand her style of alt electronic pop maybe an acquired taste, due to her quirkiness in music and this album is no different.

With many of the tracks produced by TV on the Radio’s David Sitek, who is known for his obscure arrangements of instrumentation and other collaborations including Sia, up-and-coming DJ/producer WNDRBRD and Bat For Lashes cohort Dan Carey, the album certainly is definitely a distinctive brand of left field pop.

Wish Bone set out to be “accepting the limitations of reality rather than creating an idealized fantasy world” which is an interesting statement with tracks named Kill My Darling and Love A Dead Man! Stand out tracks are lead single Renaissance Girls with its hypnotic marching beat and second single Pyromaniac with its funky beats, summer guitar rifts and soft bongo drum percussion.

Cherry On Top’s is a delicate piano driven track with a deep R&B beat and definitely potential if just had a slight bit more pop edge, like Oh Land’s previous album. Even her collaboration with Sia, Green Card could go further and push the pop boundaries and the two folky numbers 3 Chances and Love You Better are sweet yet feel a bit misplaced on the album.

Overall the album doesn’t miss the mark and will still favour well with Oh Land fans. It's more raw, deep and intimate album, yet doubt the LP will cross over into mainstream charts and she remain a more quirky pop star, however we kind of think that could have been the plan all along..!

2.5 Pop Stars out of 5 Oh Land.
