Interview - Bonnie Anderson

It’s been 6 years since Bonnie Anderson took out the Australia’s Got Talent, crown at tender age of 12 years old, however instead of entering in showbiz at such a young age, she took her time to “be a kid for a while”. But now at 18 years old, she is ready to set the charts alight, with new single Raise The Bar...

We recently caught up with the singer to talk about her absence, her new single, forthcoming album, touring with Olly Murs and wearing a big hat in the sun. It’s the SnapCacklePop Interview with Bonnie Anderson…

Hey Bonnie, welcome to SCP, how are you?
I am sooo good, very excited and lovely to be chatting to you

Awww thanks! So firstly congrats on your tour with Olly Murs, the SCP team headed down and you were amazing
Thank you so much

How was it being on tour?
It's been incredible, great shows and I had so much fun. Being able to sing my brand new single Raise The Bar has been really crazy and to be looking out into the audience and the fans knowing the song a little has been really exciting.

And how was hanging out with Olly?
He's such a great guy, so down to earth, so humble and I was so thankful to be on his tour.

You mentioned your new single Raise The Bar, how exciting is it to finally get your own music out there?
It's incredible. Hearing my song on the radio for the first time was so cool and very overwhelming. I was actually driving and had to pull over to take it all in.

It's a very uplifting pop, should we expect this from your album?
A lot of my music is quite raw and honest. That's the kind of person I am and want to portray that in my music. I was actually brought up listening to soul music and that comes through in a lot of my music, as well as the pop element.

You worked with DNA on Raise The Bar, should we expect more tracks on the album with these super producers?
I did. Actually I have been working with them since I was 15years old. They  were the first BIG producers I worked with and they are incredible. I really really love them and was so happy to release my very first single with those guys.

On the tour you did a cover of Alicia Keys Empire State of Mind, is she a big influence of yours?
Yes! Alicia is absolutely incredible and I have seen her live before and she is just amazing. Like me, she's quite raw and honest. She has an amazing vocal ability.

Who else has inspired you into music?
Firstly I've got to say my mum. My mum was in a band growing up and definitely inspired me in so many ways but not just in music, but to follow my dreams, having the courage and being comfortable in my own skin. Then have to say Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey when I was growing up, Christina Aguilera and more recently Jessie J.

So Jessie J was the singer who inspired you to rap?
Yeah, there is a track on the album where I rap which is a little crazy. But not on all the songs.

When should we expect the album?
I'm always writing, so its always moving when it will be released. However it's nearly there.

You voice live is AMAZING. Do you have a vocal coach?
No. I've been to singing lessons growing up, however not really now. I just make sure I look after my voice and my secret weapon is honey. Always have some before I perform to moisten up the vocal cords. [Laughs]

So tell us about the video for Raise The Bar?
Basically we shot it in Sydney on a beautiful day with the sun shining. Its very summer, its very fun and uplifting. We have BMX riders, skateboarders and guys doing crazy jumps off buildings. It's basically about us raising the bar and doing the best we can. It's really good fun!

Christmas is coming, what are you up to?
Up until Christmas I'm crazy busy and will most probably only get a few days off and I'll be hanging out with my family and relaxing.

Why such a long wait between you winning Australia's Got Talent and releasing music?
I've always had the drive to work in the music industry, however being so young after winning Australia's Got Talent at 12 years old , I knew I wasn't ready. I think it was great for me to take time out and think about what I wanted to do, learning to play the guitar, the piano and write good songs. Now feels like the right time. I'm so excited and feels like it was definitely worth the wait.

So what is planned for 2014?
OMG! 2014, that just sounds crazy! Where has the year gone?
My album hopefully is coming however I can tell you the next single is on its way...

Is the next single going to be Break The Ice?
No, but EVERYONE is loving that song and I hope it does make it to be a single one day as I love that song too.

Do you reckon there will be your own tour next year?
Definitely. Touring is going to be a HUGE thing for me and means I can get on the road and be able to connect with my fans.

Here are your SnapCacklePop Big 5 questions...
Bring it on!

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
Oh thats a hard one! I would be bird, so I can fly and get places quickly and take in spectacular views

You are very engaged with social media, what's your favourite app?
I love them all! Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and above all my fav is Shazam!

2013 has been an amazing year for pop, who do you think should win one of our SnapCacklePop Music Awards?
Loving Guy Sebastians new song at the minute so will say him.

If you were abandoned on a desert island, what 3 things would you take with you?
My phone if it has reception! [Laughs] Water and lip balm or maybe a hat.

No clothes?
It's a big hat [Laughs]

Lastly, if you had a super power what would it be?
I want so many! I'd like the ability to disappear or walk through walls.

Bonnie Anderson, thank you from all at SCP HQ. Good luck with the new single and album next year.
