SnapCacklePop Music Awards - CACKLE Worst POP of 2012..!

Let's cut straight to the chase. And the winner is....

 Flo RidaWhistle
Why does Whistle top the SCP pops for the single worst track of the year? Admittedly, the whistle along "do do do doooo duo" bit sticks in your head and the tune makes you what to skip down the street, but listen closely to the lyrics and it's skin crawlingly creepy.
As all pop fans know, good pop should be for everyone, not just rappers and ho's. The disturbing thing about this track is it's made to closely resemble a nursery rhyme but the thought of any six year old singing along to the lyrics below is just plain yuck.
Can you blow my whistle baby, whistle baby
Let me know
Girl I'm gonna show you how to do it
And we start real slow
You just put your lips together
And you come real close
Can you blow my whistle baby, whistle baby
Here we go
Urrrrrggghhh … gross!

Runner Up
PsyGangnam Style
2012 may have been all about Gangnam Style with K-Pop sensation, Psy smashing all records with his irritating ditty about Korea's uppity shopping mecca (he's runner up worst track of 2012), but in terms of sheer annoyance and insidious double entendre's, the worst pop of 2012 gong goes to …. Flo Rida for Whistle.

Honourable Mention
Mariah Carey - Triumphant (Get ‘Em)
Mariah Carey get's an honourable mention for Triumphant (Get 'Em). Old Mimi still has a great set of lungs on her, but unfortunately she's belting out numbers that sound more like they were created in 1992 rather than 2012. *sad face*

SnapCackle Pop Music Awards - SNAP Single of the Year

There were son many nomination this year it was hard to draw up a short list, so we created a long one instead. The nominees are...
Guy Sebastian & Lupe Fiasco - Battle Scars
Usher - Climax
Nicki Minaj - Starships
Karmin - Brokenhearted
Little Mix - DNA
Marina & The Diamonds - Power & Control
David Guetta / Sia - Titanium

Kelly Clarkson - Stronger
Rita Ora - How We Do Party
Justin Bieber - Boyfriend
  The Saturdays - 30 Days

And the winner is...
David Guetta - Titanium Feat. Sia
If any song represents 2012 better than Titanium we don't know about it. This was a huge smash hit around the world and introduced Australian artist Sia to a whole new audience. The song is simply stunning and cements David Guetta as not only one of the best dance acts in the world but one of the best songwriters as well. Choosing Sia was a stroke of genius - her powerful vocals suiting the track perfectly. And topped off with a brilliant video, Titanium is undoubtedly the SNAP Single of 2012..!

Runner Up...
Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
Whilst Titanium may have been the most amazing single of the year, Call Me Maybe probably had the biggest impact of any song this year. This song spawned thousands of parodies - not because it's a bad song - it's not - it's because its the most catchy track of the year!! Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen was unleashed on the world and before long the track was number one EVERYWHERE. 'Hey I just met you, and this is crazy" became the lyrics on everyones lips and Call Me Maybe was cemented as one of the biggest hits of 2012. We think there's only one other song that my have had a bigger impact - that would be Gangnam Style - but Call Me Maybe is not only catchy, it's also a brilliant pop track with an equally brilliant video - definately worthy of Runner up in the SNAP Single of the year..!

Honourable mention...
Karmin - Brokenhearted
This is what we love - Brokenhearted is Pop at its core - upbeat, fun, catchy, with great vocals and a groovy beat. We fell totally in love with Karmin this year and Brokenhearted represent one of our best songs of the year. We had a chat to Amy from Karmin this year and not only is she talented she's incredibly sweet too! The song grabbed attention world wide and introduced this talented duo to the charts. Brokenhearted may not be one of the biggest songs of the year but it's definately worthy of an honorable mention in the SNAP Single of the Year..!

SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2012 - SCPop King Of the Year

Last year's Pop King award went to Mr David Guetta, however it was a close battle between the french DJ and Calvin Harris. They are both up for nomination again, however who will take out the crown this year with new contenders bidding for the famous SCPop King Of The Year. The nominations are....

Guy Sebastian
Drake
Calvin Harris
David Guetta
Justin Bieber

And the winner is...
Calvin Harris
It’s hard to deny that Calvin Harris has had a great year. Producing brilliant track after track, then landing all his hits in the fantastic new album 18 Months, its certainly has been Mr. Harris’s year. The year started touring with Rihanna on the European leg of her Loud Tour and then slamming this years Sydney Mardi Gras Party in March. Releasing singles Bounce featuring Kelis and Feel So Close back in 2011, he returned to releasing cracking singles such as Let’s Go featuring Ne-Yo, We’ll Be Coming Back featuring fellow DJ/Producer Example and the fifth singles Sweet Nothing featuring Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. Packing all his hits in his long overdue third album 18months, the DJ collaborated with further popstars including Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal and Ellie Goulding. Speaking of the album, "I'm going for pretty epic-sounding dance records. I guess the whole sound has just moved on in terms of production as I've got a new studio and some new gear to make the sounds I wasn't able to make before." We couldn’t agree more Mr Harris, the album is brilliant and its been an amazing year, hence being awarded our SCP King of Pop 2013.

Runner Up
Home grown Australian talent Guy Sebastian has done us proud this year from mentoring Samantha Jade to winning X-Factor and releasing a brilliant album Armageddon, which produced the 7 times platinum selling single Battle Scars, which is also up for SNAP Single Of The Year. Great year Mr Sebastian, well done.

Honourable Mention

Ok, we have to admit, our view on the Bieber has changed this year. Before this year, we found him slightly annoying, however this year we have learned to love the little popstar after producing more grown up pop music, thats fun, edgy and damm right catchy. It started with the release of Boyfriend, then the brilliant As Long As You Love Me and collaborating with Nicki Minaj on Beauty and The Beat, it certainly was a new sound from the Bieber which certainly made like him more. Well done Bieber. B+ for you in Pop School this year.

SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2012 - SCPop Queen of the Year

Time for the girls to step up and fight over the SCPop Queen of the Year. Who will take the crown from last years winner Adele? And the nominees are...

Samantha Jade
Rihanna
Kylie Minogue
Gwen Stefani
Katy Perry
Lana Del Ray

The winner is...
Kylie Minogue
What a year our Aussie Pop Queen has had - not only was it the amazing K25 celebrations of her 25th year of Pop, she had a brilliant new track Timebomb as a lead up to her new Best Of album, she created a gorgeous remake of her greatest hits in the beautiful instrumental album The Abbey Road Sessions, an incredible use of social media to get her fans all excited and Kylie appeared everywhere including the amazing Anti-Tour, purely for her fans - this woman knows how to please! To top it all off she's helping to plan and will be kicking off the Sydney 2012/2013 New Years fireworks! There's no one else that could possibly be SCPop Queen in 2012 - we love you Kylie..!

Runner Up...
Katy Perry
If ever anyone ever blew away the whole world with an album, it's Katy Perry's last album Teenage Dream. A massive 5 number ones to equal Michael Jackson's record and 7 top 5 singles from 2010 through to 2012's re-issue with the last single Wide Awake from her movie Part Of Me. She went through the highest highs and lowest lows and came out on top. Her movie we've watched in the SCP offices several times and its given us so much respect for this amazing hard working musician who adores her fans and dedicates herself to her music. It's her amazing achievements and brilliant doco that makes Katy Perry our runner up SCPop Queen of 2012..!

Honourable Mention...
Rihanna
Does this woman ever have any down time? Pumping out the hits Rihanna releases an album every year - more than any other mainstream artist. Not only that - each is a bonafide hit!! Diamonds is one of the biggest tracks of the year and is loved in the SCP offices - Rihanna also manages to appear everywhere in promotions around the world, collaborates with artists like Calvin Harris, releases perfumes and is about to tour the world! Purely for the amazing volume of music she gives us, Rihanna is worthy of a mention in the SCPop Queen of the year awards..!

SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2012 - OMG! What an awesome debut Album Award

It's quite hard to break into the pop world and create a brilliant new album, however these stars, clearly did. And the nominations are...

Little Mix - DNA
Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE
Graffiti6 - Colours
Emeli Sande – Our Version of Events
Icona Pop – Iconic EP
Lana Del Rey – Born to Die
Solange - True

The winner is...
Emeli Sande – Our Version of Events
There were some great albums this year, but it was a unanimous decision that Emeli Sandé's debut album blew us all away and had hit after hit. Daddy, Next To Me, Heaven, Read All About It all smashed the charts but each song on the album is a pure gem - it's an album you can listen to over and over again - believe us - we did!! It's special, it's beautiful and delicate but it has guts, it's an album that everyone must have in their collection, it's also the SnapCacklePop OMG! What an awesome debut album award winner..!

Runner Up...
Graffiti6 - Colours
It was at the start of the year when we discovered Graffiti6 and at the end of the year, their album Colours still gets played almost ever day in the SCP offices. Free has gotta be one of our favorite songs of the year - lead singer Jamie Scott's amazing voice blends perfectly with the beat and amazing musicality of the song. Not only is Free a brilliant song but every track on Colours is a rich tapestry of musical brilliance - if you haven't heard of Graffiti6 you need to - and you need to tell everyone you know of this amazing album too..!

Honourable Mention...
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
There's been so much buzz around Frank Ocean this year - Grammy Nominations, big celebrities as fans, collaborations and much more and you know what? All deserved. Channel Orange has cemented Frank Ocean as THE rising star of the R&B scene - smooth grooves, amazing vocals and obvious talent Frank Ocean has in abundance - his video for Swim Good is brilliant too! If you love a great R&B album, Channel Orange is a must for your collection..!

SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2012 - OMG! That brilliant new artist award..!

A very interesting category, that sparks much debate at SCP HQ, as there have been so many new pop stars emerging this year, however thanks to your help, we drew up a short list. And the nominations were...

Rita Ora
Lana Del Rey
Karmin
Emeli Sande
Frank Ocean
Little Mix
Carly Rea Jepsen
Icona Pop

And the winner is...
Little Mix
Yes these girls had us at "Hello", well it was actually "These wings are made to flllllllyyyy" as they burst onto the pop charts with their debut single Wings and the SCP team were instantly hooked. They are a fresh talent to the pop world, diverse, cheeky, charming and full of personality and all four of them are very talented. They have achieved so much since winning X-Factor last year, with their debut album DNA also picking up an nomination for OMG, what a awesome debut album! With some reports claiming these girls could be the next Spice Girls, they are definitely going to be looking at world domination in 2013. Congrats Little Mix, such a great addition to the pop world. We met the gorgeous girls earlier this year, check out the interview here..!

Runner Up
Karmin

Engaged couple Amy & Nick aka Karmin, burst onto the charts with their brilliant track Brokenhearted earlier this year and have since got the world attention with the blend of pop/hip-hop that has funky fresh beat. They released their debut EP Hello which served up second single Hello, however we reckon there is going to be a lot more from American Pop duo Karmin in the next year, so keep your ears open..!

Honourable mention
PSY
Alright, we understand that you maybe thinking "WTF SCP, PSY as brilliant new artist?" Well we would understand your concerns, however its an honourable mention, not for his single Gangman Style, its more for what he has achieved with just one single. Yep, he has managed to create a worldwide hit, had over 1billion YouTube hits and created a crazy dance move, that everyone loves to hate. Yes its annoying, but try finding someone on the planet who doesn't know the track! We'll just be interested in what Mr Psy does next, or whether he will fall down the One Hit Wonder path like many pop stars have done before. Only time will tell..!

SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2012 - Video Of The Year..!

As we kick off the SnapCacklePop Music Awards for 2012, it's worth noting it was once again its was a massive debate amongst the SCP team, even with more tears and tantrums as we battled it out over the best pop of 2012. We kick off with the best video award and the nominations were...

Chris Brown – Don’t Wake Me Up
M.I.A. - Bad Girls
Kylie Minogue – Timebomb
Pink – Try
Justin Beiber – Beauty & The Beat
David Guetta/SIA - Titanium

And the winner is...
Pink - Try
Said by the singer to be her favourite video ever we can understand why, as the singer uses choreography to tell the story romance expressing their frustrations with us by dance. The second single from P!nk's new album The Truth About Love was directed by Floria Sigismondi and choreographed by The Golden Boyz, see’s the singer throws herself and her suitably ripped male dancer Colt Prattes around the room violently in a passionate dance routine with explosions of paint as they fight. The end of the video shows the pair running into each other’s arms as they realize how much they need each other. A truly beautiful video, full of passion, creativity and one hell of a hot man!! No wonder she said "Making this video was the most fun I've ever had in my entire career" Congratulations Pink, you are this years Video Of The Year..!

Runner Up
M.I.A - Bad Girls
M.I.A. action packed and gritty video for Bad Girls was directed by Romain Gavras and is set amongst crumbled architecture, as the singer leads a crowd of women decked in traditional middle-eastern garb with a hipster twist, driving swanky cars in a desert drag race and doing some pretty impressive stunts. Pushing boundaries, the clip has received both positive and negative reviews from some saying it’s a visual representation of the political struggle for Middle Eastern feminists, compared to rave reviews saying it is pushing boundaries, even winning Best Directed and Best Cinematography at the MTV Music Awards this year.

Honourable mention...
Kylie Minogue - Timebomb
Honourable mention goes to the Kylie Minogue in what has been her 25th year in the pop world, she release the brilliant TimeBomb. Back in her signature hot pants and also a raunchy little black dress, the singer looks stunning in the Christian Larson directed clip, with Kylie being shot from various perspectives such as camera phones, passers by and video camera. Then strutting down the streets of Soho, London before ending the clip on the back dancing on the back of motorbike performing a wheelie.

New Video Alert - Shiny Toy Guns - Somewhere To Hide

Formed back in 2002, LA based Shiny Toy Guns have had a rollercoaster ride as a band - Grammy nominations, replacement of lead singers, their songs used in commercials and even band members with side projects. All is back on track for the band now with the release of their new video Somewhere To Hide - if you're not familiar with their style, it really is quite a crossover of Robyn, Kelly Clarkson and a bit of MGMT! This is a pretty cool track with a great video to go along with it - will they reach their Grammy nomination high again? We'll have to wait & see..!
