SnapCacklePop Interview - Danielle Blakey

We discovered Danielle Blakey a few months ago after listening to her brilliant track Fearless. The  beautiful and acoustic performance of the track blew us away and we just had to catch up with the Sydney lass to ask her about her style of music, her forthcoming second album, why she is like lemonade and what she shares with Kylie Minogue..!

Hi Danielle, welcome to SnapCacklePop! How are you today?
Thank you for having me! I am doing really well :)

You have described your music style as being a blend of LA pop and a pure organic acoustic sound, please explain?
Yes, I do explain my style as more organic, acoustic pop as there are so many levels and styles of “pop music” that I find that it helps listeners who don’t know what I’m about have a general idea of who I am and what my music is about. I do love my songs to have an acoustic vibe but still have that pop element to the songs. If you listen to my first two singles Fearless and Closer they both use acoustic instruments like Banjo and Mandolin which I think adds a nice texture and depth to the sound.

How organic are you?
On a scale of 1-10 I would say 7.5. I love acoustic and real sounding instruments on tracks, but also love that polished, pop element. As a person, I am fairly laid back and chilled so I have always wanted that to come through my music.

So tell us a bit about your recent track Closer
Closer was the first song I wrote for my EP and the 2nd single to be released. I wrote it with my producer and it was the first song we had written together. It is about wanting to find out more about a person who you are beginning to fall in love with.

According to news.com.au you are one to watch in 2012. Why what are you up to?
Back in October of 2011 I won a competition called NA2R (New Artist to Radio) which allowed me to showcase my song Fearless on commercial radio around the country on high rotation. It was a massive moment for me as I had been songwriting, travelling back and forth overseas (USA) for music, songwriting and performing for several years, so it was a great chance and opportunity to have Australian audiences hear me and my music for the first time. I have also been songwriting with and for some big artists here like Stan Walker and The McClymonts. I am currently working and writing songs for various projects including The Voice and hope to release my EP/mini album later this year.

Who would you “watch” if you could?
I am always looking for up and coming artists from overseas, on playlists and indie websites. At the moment I would watch a band called Fun. Very cool sound and I like the video for their single We Are Young too.

When should we expect an EP/album?
Looking at finishing my EP by August

Who are your influences?
So many, where to start! I grew up listening to so much music, from my dads old records (The Eagles, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Moody Blues, Willie Nelson) and my first album/cd was Mariah Carey. Also Tina Arena, Spice Girls and TLC. I listened at a young age also to Ella Fitzgerald and also Leanne Rimes so my ear was picking up a lot of different styles. I loved listening to the female songwriters to from Carol King to Michelle Branch, Jewel and Sheryl Crowe. I also went through a massive BB King, Eric Clapton, Cream and Jimi Hendrix phase too as well as Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.

If you could describe your music in 3 words what would they be?
Acoustic Pop Melodies

Who are listening to you on your ipod right now?
I am one of those people who has their ipod on shuffle. So it’s always a surprise! The song that is on now is James Morrison- You Give Me Something

You are a Sydney girl, where would we catch you hanging out on a weekend?
I love markets, movies, food and fashion, so probably at Roselle Markets, Glebe Markets or at the movies.

According to your website you are sweet, smart and refreshing. So we have the following questions…
a) what makes you sweet?
The amount of lollies I eat! Nah, I would say I try to be friendly and always open for a good conversation and try to always smile :)
b) if you are smart, please name all the planets in alphabetical order... off the top of my head and I am not using google here, promise!... Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus and Venus.
c) How refreshing are you on a scale of soft drinks?
I would say a Lemonade with a slice of lemon and lime on a hot summers day :)

You are also a writer, are you writing all of your new album?
Yes I will be.

Who else have you written for?
I have written for many artists, some have been Stan Walker, Annabell Faye, McKenzie Comer and Cassi Hilbers.

How was it working with Stan Walker?
He is such a great guy. Extremely talented singer and a lot of fun in the studio!

We know you are friends with Barry Southgate, how come?
Barry and I go way back... we met about 8 years a go at a singing karaoke competition and have recently crossed paths again in the last year which has been so great! We write all the time together too! :)

You have been writing with him recently, what on?
For a whole lot of projects, songwriting is great at the moment! Writing for The Voice and also for some albums for a few artists. Maybe a song for my EP too!

Who would you love to work with in the pop world?
This is tough as there isn’t just one person... I’d love to write and sing with Adam Levine from Maroon 5 and also Keith Urban.

What’s next for you in 2012?
To continue to keep writing and making music. Also to release my EP and to organise a little tour as well.

So to end our our interview we like to end with our SnapCacklePop Big 5 questions...

If you could have a superpower what would it be and why?
To have tele-portation powers. If I felt like a coffee from Italy or Pizza from NYC I could just click my fingers and be there! Also would be great to travel to all the places I would love to go to perform and write songs!

Who would you love to do a duet with?
Would love to sing with, Michael Buble, Adam Levine, Keith Urban and Mariah Carey.

Whats your favorite kitchen appliance?
The Kettle. I love a good cup of tea

Who would play you in a movie?
I think Katherine Heigl in a brown wig or if we could go back in time... Audrey Hepburn
5) What’s a secret you can tell us that no one else knows?
hmmm... then it wouldn’t be a secret right? I can tell you a fact though.. I have the exact, down to the year, birthday as Colbie Caillat. Also the same birth date as Kylie Minogue.

We love you more for sharing Kylie's birthday..!
