And the winner is...SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2011

So its finally here! The SnapCacklePop Music Awards 2011 are announced today! The SCP crew were locked in a room (Pub) for many hours and fought long and hard over who they felt should win. There were tears, tantrums and even a shoe thrown at someones head! But here we are, with Adele sweeping the floor with 4, yes FOUR awards! Congratulations to all our Winners, we love you at SCP HQ and thank you for a great 2011!

And thank you our loyal readers for helping us choose.
Happy New Year from all at SCP xx

SCP Video of the Year

Winner - Gotye - Somebody I Used To Know
Runner Up - Rihanna feat Calvin Harris - We Found Love
(See Full List of Nominees here)

Somebody I Used To Know starts with a moody nudy bit as Wally De Backer (aka Gotye) explains his side of a budding romance turning into bit of nasty work.

"How do 'friends' collect your records and then change your number?" he bleats as he's drawn all over by some serious stencil art.

Then Kimbra comes into the piece and gives her side of the story and it turns out the end of the relationship wasn't as simple as Wally makes out.

Not since Eminem took on Dido in Stan have we seen this level of tense, 'Boy vs Girl' obsessive love storytelling in a video clip. Raw and emotional you can't help but finish watching and think 'Yep, I've been there before'.

On the other end of the scale we had Rhianna featuring Calvin Harris documenting a smasher of a relationship.

Rhianna starts the party depicting the innocence of the first flush of love with a few smooches with her fella to a storming techno beat reminiscent of Pump Up the Jams.

Soon RiRi and her peroxide lover are pashing in a festival field while Calvin bangs out the beats.  Pills are popped, blow backs smoulder and pupils dilate.  You definitely get the feeling class A's are involved. And the comedown is mighty.

Again a few of us at SCP towers thought, 'Yep been there before too'.

It was a close call between these two clips for SCP Video Of The Year, but despite the full on sensory assault from Rhianna, Gotye made the grade purely based on originality, simplicity and rawness of emotion.

OMG! That Brilliant New Artist Award

Winner - Jessie J

Runner Up - Vanbot
(See Full List of Nominees here)

There are not too many artists that debut as successfully as Jessie J. This new British Pop star launched herself on the world with a BANG with smash hit singles like Price Tag, Do It Like A Dude, Who's Laughing Now and Domino topping charts around the world. Her album Who You Are charted in the Top 10 in many countries including the UK and Australia and got to number 11 in the US - not bad for a debut artist! She's also appeared on David Guetta's new album singing Repeat and sung with James Morrison on his song Up in between a hectic touring schedule promoting her album.  Admired for her dedication to music, her power vocals and kooky nature, Jessie J is a deserving winner of the SCP OMG! That Brilliant New Artist Award!

The first time we heard Lost Without You we knew that we were listening to something special. Vanbot has made a huge impression on us this year, her album delivering Robyn and Abba'esque Pop that immerses you in good vibes till you burst - just like her Swedish compatriots! Undoubtedly one of the best artists to emerge in 2011 Vanbot just misses out to Jessie J in the wake of Jessie J's tsunami of hits that she's delivered this year. We cannot wait to hear what Vanbot comes up with next and send her our congrats for being runner-up in the SCP OMG! What A Brilliant New Artist category!

OMG! What an awesome debut Album Award
Winner - Vanbot - Vanbot
Foster The People - Torches
(See Full List of Nominees here)

At SCP towers we have had a sound track to this year and it was Vanbot's self titled debut album. A brilliant album full of pure electro-pop delights that truly deserve the SCP Award. Some have compared her to fellow Swede Robyn,  however this popstar (who has an alter ego Vanessa) shines brightly on her own with her catchy lyrics, pop-dance beats and stomping choruses. And she is talented too, after writing and producing all the tracks on the album together with Sebastian Forslund. We salute you Vanbot, thank you for coming to our pop world, we love you and can't wait to hear more. A very well deserved award!

Runner up goes to Foster The People. the Indie pop band’s single Pumped Up Kicks was an international smash hit and set the tone for their album Torches. Being compared to MGMT and Pheonix with their catchy, electro-lite dance-pop feel. A great debut which is very indie-pop, very now and beautifully made. Congrats boys.

One To Watch in 2012 Award
Winner - Strange Talk
Runner Up - Dev
(See Full List of Nominees here)

This was a category of great debate at SCP towers and some SCP readers may have noted that Strange Talk were not actually on the short list of nominations! As we discussed this category, each of us made a comment how brilliant we thought they boys were and how great their singles and EPs were and when we caught them live, they just were awesome. So we made a executive decision and brought them in as a late entry and they won hands down! With their catchy electro pop tracks Climbing Walls and Eskimo Boy these boys are definitely one to watch in 2012!

First appearing in Pete’s Pop Picks back in July, Dev has risen up the pop charts throughout the year. First gaining popularity across the globe – with her song Booty Bounce heavily sampled in the smash hit Like A G6 from Far East Movement. In The Dark is a dance pop track with a brilliant film clip that you lose yourself to on the dance floor – this song as so many layers you’ll want to hear it over & over. A well deserved runner up and definitely one to watch in 2012.

SCPop King of the Year
Winner - David Guetta
Very Close Runner Up - Calvin Harris
(See Full List of Nominees here)
Well… the gloves were off when it came to working out who was the SCPop King of 2011.

After it dawned on us that SCP's shortlist consisted of DJ's and producers, we had to work out what really made a 'Pop King' in these dance heavy daze!

Was it purely commercial success? Was it the songs that encapsulated the topsy turvy times of 2011? Or was it down to being the guy most people in the pub recognised on google images after a few too many brewskis?

At the end of the day this was the defining factor in deciding the winner. More people recognised David Guetta than Calvin Harris as a 'Pop Megastar', despite after doing a poll with the bar girls and a few drunken bar flies we found out more people thought Calvin Harris was 'cooler'.

Guetta won 'King of Pop' based on chart domination throughout the year, boosting the likes of Sia's career in the States, redefining electro pop, most votes form 'YOU' dear readers and the fact Calvin's full album hasn't been released yet (despite amazing tracks already being chart ball busters of 2011).

But watch out in 2012 Calvin Harris fans, the sexy Scot might just be top of the pops for next year…

SCPop Queen of the Year
Winner - Adele
Runner Up - Lady Gaga
(See Full List of Nominees here)
2011 was undoubtedly Adele's year. Her album 21 graced the top of charts around the world, not just for weeks, but in most cases for months! Her smash singles Rolling In The Deep and Someone Like You cemented this British chanteuse as new Pop royalty. When it came to deciding who was the SCP Pop Queen for 2011 the choice was made fast an unanimously. Adele represented the music of 2011 and there could be no other choice. Congratulations Adele!

2011 saw Lady GaGa injecting more or herself into society. Her album Born This Way not only gave us the fantastic title track but also new hits like You And I, Hair and Edge Of Glory. She continued pushing the fashion boundaries of fashion and frequently made headlines for her unique behaviour. The magic that is GaGa makes her a deserving Runner up for SCP Pop Queen 2011

SCPop Peoples Choice - Artist Of The Year Award
Winner - Adele
(See Full List of Nominees here)
This is the award voted by you, our gorgeous readers. You made your vote loud and clear. The winner of the SCP Peoples Choice for 2011 is... Adele! Winning by a clear margin Adele touched the whole world with her emotional, moving and simply stunning music. The clarity and strength of her voice, the beautifully written and produced songs on her album and her humble nature has endeared Adele to not only Pop lovers but music lovers of all ages and across a broad spectrum of musical tastes. Congratulations Adele for winning another award and being the SCP Peoples Choice of 2011!

SNAP Single of the Year
Winner - Adele - Rolling In The Deep
Runner-up - Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger
(See Full List of Nominees here)
2011 was a stinker of a year when it came to natural disasters, riots and financial turmoil. Upside down, inside out and all over the place describes the feelings at times at SCP HQ

So when it came to deciding on Single Of The Year there was no question to hand it over to Adele for the bombastic pop smasher 'Rolling In the Deep'.

Upon reflection, this song seemed to follow us everywhere in 2011.

Jump in the back of a cab and it was on the radio, watching financial markets crumble on Wall Street and it's on the news, riots in London - this was the soundtrack. There's no denying that "Tears are gonna fall… rolling in the deep", captured the chaos, fear, anarchy and crumbling optimism of 2011 better than any other.

And it's a perfect pop song. Nuff said!

CACKLE Worst POP of 2011

Winner - Kim Kardashian - JAM
(See Full List of Nominees here)
It would be easy to make this out to Rebecca Black for her cringe worthy teen opus Friday

But when we thought about her pure gumption to get off her ass and make it happen, become the viral hit of 2011 and also manage to score a starring role in Katy Perry's heavily influenced Last Friday Night video clip, we thought: "Girl deserves a certain amount of cudos".

But it IS a RUBBISH track and comes second in Worst Single of 2011.

So without further ado we announce THE Worst Single of the Year to "the world's most famous arse" - Kim Kardashian and her attempt at a single Jam (Turn It Up)

Upon having look at comments through YouTube, when searching for this song, we stumbled across these corkers that really sum up our feelings about the track.

  • "Turn me up, Turn me up." No thank you, I'm turning you down.
  • Actually, I'm turning you off!
    Mishelenabi
  • "Her lips...look like an asshole."
    MonsieurCliveHandjob
  • We couldn't agree more...

POP Album of the Year

Winner - Adele - 21
Runner Up - Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
(See Full List of Nominees here)
2011 saw some amazing albums released and records broken but it was a 21 year old singer from Tottenham, UK that stole our hearts. Adele's second album, 21 has become a permanent fixture of households world-wide. Adele spent 11 consecutive weeks at number 1 in the UK, the longest ever by a Female artist. 21 was album of the year at the American Music Awards and is nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys in February 2012. The first artist in history to have the biggest album, single and video of the year, Adele has won the SCP Album Of The Year not only of its success but for the genius that is.. 21.

If Katy Perry has one more US number one hit song from Teenage Dream, she will be the new record holder of the record of most number 1 singles from a single album, beating the record set by Michael Jackson's Bad as the most successful album in history. Currently equalling the record set by BadTeenage Dream has spawned 5 number one hit singles with California Gurls, Teenage Dream, E.T., Firework and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F). With success like this, Teenage Dream from Katy Perry is deserving of being runner-up for SCP Album Of The Year!

And its performances like this that is why Adele cleared the floor at the SnapCacklePop Music Awards.

SnapCacklePop Music Awards - POP Album of the Year Nominations

As things heat up in discussing the winners of this year SCP Music awards,  we now can reveal the nominations for POP Album of the Year. Its been such a big year and sooo many great albums so the shortlist ended up with ten! This is going to be a challenge category to decide! Here are the nominations for POP Album of the Year...

Adele - 21
No one can deny that Adele has had an amazing year! 21 has been an international smash hit reaching number 1 in many countries around the world. With tracks like Rolling In The Deep, Set Fire To The Rain and Someone Like You the album is full of sad, reflective and heartfelt songs that show a maturity and depth and sung beautifully. The album is timeless.

Lady Gaga - Born This Way
Born This Way was most probably one of the most promoted albums in recent years, with the Gaga marketing team creating deals with Starbucks, Google and Zynga’s Farmville to promote Mother Monsters new album. With an album full of Synth-driven new wave techno rock pop, it has certainly shown the world that Lady Gaga is one very talented lady.

Vanbot - Vanbot
Already nominated for best debut alum, the Swedish singer also gets a nod for Best Album of the year. Vanbot self-titled album is upbeat & bubbly modern pop that will make you wanna grab the denim jacket, dye ya hair white blonde, comb ya hair back BIG and grab ya stylised futuristic urban wardrobe and DANCE! Delivering us infectious upbeat and electro pop in tracks like Make Me Break Me and Lost Without You the album is pure gold from start to finish A must have for any pop lovers collection! Its pop at its best!

Katy Perry – Teenage Dream
Though originally released in 2010 Teenage Dream has been producing hits throughout 2011. If Katy release just one more single from the album, she will once again make pop history.

Britney Spears - Femme Fatale
Femme Fatale is BRILLIANT! On a similar level to Blackout (Still one of the most underrated albums ever – but don’t get us started!) THIS album is pure dance Ibiza pop! It seems to be injected full of electro dance beats! We are not sure if Britney has ever been to Ibiza, but its full of techno builds, house pianos and phat beats! With brilliant tracks as
Hold It Against Me, Till The World End and I Wanna Go are only just a sample of the many great tracks that are on this album and set the tone for the rest of the album.

Wynter Gordan – With The Music I Die
Like we said in the OMG! What an awesome debut Album Award Nominations With The Music I Die is a beautiful album full of twelve pop dance tracks including Dirty Talk, Till Death and Buy My Love. Great debut album from this new artist and worthy of the nomination

Clare Maquire – Light After Dark
Not heard of Clare Maquire? Well if you like Florence and the Machine, you’ll love Clare. Light After Dark is rich, deep, with a touch of ever so slightly Gothic, big voiced, big choruses and empowering lyrics.
First single Ain’t Nobody made top ten in the UK however even though having fantastic singles as The Last Dance and The Shield and The Sword, they haven’t had much chart success. Definitely an album is well worth a listen.

Will Young – Echoes

We feel in love with Will Young when he first won UK Pop Idol – after his first album, its was Will sophomore album Friday’s Child that made his move from Winner of talent contest to brilliant male artist – shift over 1.8million albums worldwide! From strength to strength and this year released his fifth record Echoes. A master piece from start to finish and filled with beautiful crafted tracks including Jealousy and Come On. Produced by Richard X this is definitely one of the pop albums of the year. Bravo Mr Will.

Gotye – Making Mirrors

Making Mirrors is the third album from Gotye and has definitely had everyone talking about it this year, with track Somebody I Used to Know going international being his breakthrough track to the world music market. With the single going 5 times platinum and his album going two time platinum, he has secured the highest selling single and album of 2011 in Australia.

Kelly Clarkson - Stronger
Though only recently released this album can not be missed off the shortlist. Stronger is the fifth studio album by American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson and is beautifully crafted from start to finish. With killer tracks like Mr Know It All and What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger) the album delivers Clarkson’s trademark pop-grunge tracks one after the other and is one of this year album highlights.

SnapCacklePop Music Awards - CACKLE Worst POP of 2011 Nominations

At SCP we always say we love all pop, we'd listen to ANYTHING! However there are some case's where SCP cringe and have to ask why a song was released in the first place! There were three standouts this year which are nominated for CACKLE Worst POP of 2011 award due to their annoyance, ridiculousness or pure WFT were you thinking! And the nominations are...

Bella Vida - Kiss Kiss Me Bang Bang
When we at SCP came across this one, more than a few eyebrows were raised! Its David HASSELHOFF daughters! Yes, Hayley & Taylor-Ann Hasslehoff formed Bella Vida who both wanted to be Pop stars since they were young and their debut single and video Kiss Kiss Me Bang Bang is an example of a track being auto-tuned to death and trying to be too many things! It’s definitely a MISS not a hit!

Kim Kardashian - JAM ( Turn It Up)
When we heard this track at SCP HQ our jaws hit the floor and all said, “WTF were you thinking” releasing that! Newly divorced Kim Kardashian’s video for her track Jam (Turn It Up) doesn’t leave much up to the imagination either as she rolls round the floor, licks her lips and flaunts her booty! Its one of those cringeworthy moments where you say stick to your day job luv, what ever you “class” as you job honey, just please don’t let it be music again! We couldn't find full video - hopefully it got taken down!

Here is the full track if you can bear to listen!

Rebecca Black – Friday
Some may say the Rebecca Black’s single Friday should not be nominated for worst pop due to its huge success. The track went viral on YouTube and other social media site around the world as it received over 167 million hits and became an international hit. However she is nominated for its cringe worthiness, repetitiveness, being auto-tuned to death and some of the worst lyrics we have heard in a long time with lyrics like 'Tomorrow is Saturday / And Sunday comes afterwards / I don't want this weekend to end'. And don’t get us started on the video!

SnapCacklePop Music Awards - SNAP Single of the Year

As the SCP crew head into a private locked room to start talks on who should win this years SCP Music Award,s we come to the biggest three categories, best single, worst single and best album of the year!
We know its going to be a total bitch fight between us, with hair pulling and name calling, as when it comes to pop we are an opinionated lot! So as SCP  HQ goes into lock down aka the pub, we present you the nominations for SNAP Single of The Year...

Rolling in the Deep - Adele
The singer with the most nominations in this years SCP Music Awards has TWO nods in this category alone. Rolling In The Deep some could say was the song that took Adele from UK singer to international star. This epic foot stomper track was written by Adele and Paul Epworth,  has lyrics that sing of a scorned lover and has, as Adele puts it a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune"

Bounce - Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris returned to the charts with a corker track, Bounce, that teared up the dance floors across worldwide. Featuring SCP fav Kelis and a cleverly worked video, Bounce was the first track of his forthcoming third yet untitled album.

We Found Love – Rihanna
We think that lead single We Found Love from Rihanna's sixth studio album Talk That Talk  is awesome and was one of the most controversial video's due to its glorification of drugs and smoking! However the lady herself describes the video differently "We’ve never done a video like this before. This is probably one of the deepest videos I’ve ever done ... its all about love and love being like a  drug, you definitely get that from this." Well there you go!

Someone Like You – Adele
Adele's follow up to Rolling In The Deep is a heart felt ballad which was inspired by a broken relationship of hers, and lyrically it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it. When the SCP office first heard this track it had us all in tears. Its simple and perfect and you could hear a pin drop when she performed the track at the 2011 BRIT Awards.

Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger
This track always gets everyone on their feet in the SCP office with this catchy track from Maroon 5 saluting Mr Mick Jagger. With a funky beat, Adam Levine's sexy vocal ( and body ) and throw in a few guest vocals from Christina Aguilera and you have a bonefido pop song! Bravo guys, great track!
