New Album Alert - Amy Winehouse - Lioness: Hidden Treasures

It has just been announced that an album of previous unreleased Amy Winehouse's material will be release on 5th December. The posthumous album titled Lioness: Hidden Treasures will feature twelve previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics as well as a couple of brand new Amy compositions which were worked on with Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi.

On Amy’s website they have just released this official statement about the new album, check out the details below!

“Today it’s been announced that on the 5th December, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, the third album from Amy Winehouse, without question one of the most talented, original, and best loved artists to emerge in popular music for decades, will be released through Island Records.
Following her tragic passing in July, some of the producers and musicians who worked closely with Amy Winehouse, among them Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi,  spent time listening over the many recordings that Amy had made, before, during, and after the release of “Frank” and “Back To Black”.  It was said by all who worked with Amy, that she never sang or played a song the same way twice. It quickly became apparent to Salaam and Mark that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting testament to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy their friend.
The 12 track collection features previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics as well as a couple of brand new Amy compositions, and has been compiled by long-time musical partners Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson in close association with Amy’s family, management and record label Island Records. “Lioness : Hidden Treasures” proves a fitting tribute to the artist, the talent and the woman and serves as a reminder of Amy’s extraordinary powers as a songwriter, a singer and an interpreter of classics”.

The full tracklisting is as follows:

Our Day Will Come (Reggae Version)
Reggae re-working of classic 60’s doo wop song produced by Salaam Remi. Recorded May 2002.

Between The Cheats
New Amy composition recorded in London in May 2008 for potential inclusion on album three produced by Salaam Remi.

Tears Dry
Originally written by Amy as a ballad, this is the original version she recorded in November 2005 in Miami with Salaam. The later uptempo version  appears on Back To Black.

Wake Up Alone
The first song recorded for the Back To Black sessions. This is the one-take demo recorded in March 2006 by Paul O’Duffy.

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
Amy’s beautiful reading of the Carole King written Shirelles classic. Produced by Mark Ronson and featuring the Dap Kings with string arrangements by Chris Elliott who did all the strings for Mark’s tracks on Back To Black. Recorded in September 2004.

One of Amy’s jukebox favourites. This is the original slower tempo version of the Mark Ronson produced post Back To Black single. Recorded in December 2006.

 Like Smoke featuring NAS
Amy and Nas became really good friends after Amy name checked the New York rapper on “Back To Black’s” “Me & Mr Jones”.  Like Smoke is finally Amy doing a song with one of her favourite artists. Produced by Salaam Remi. Recorded in May 2008.

The Girl From Ipanema
The first song the 18 year old Amy sang when she first went to Miami to record with Salaam. Salaam remarked that “the way she re-interpreted this bossa nova classic made me realise that I was dealing with a very special talent. Her approach to the song was so young and fresh, it really inspired the rest of our sessions.” Recorded in May 2002.

Amy had talked to Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson of the Roots about working together. “Halftime” is a song that Amy and Salaam had worked on since the Frank sessions.  The result is beautiful. Recorded in August 2002.

Best Friends
Frank era live set opener produced by Salaam Remi. Probably the first song that early Amy fans would have heard live. Recorded in February 2003.

Body & Soul with Tony Bennett
Cover of 30’s jazz standard with hero Tony Bennett. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios London in March 2011 and produced by Phil Ramone. Amy’s final studio recording.

A Song For You
Heartbreaking and emotional version of the Leon Russell classic made famous by Donny Hathaway. Hathaway was Amy’s all-time favourite artist and the song was recorded in one take, just Amy and her guitar, at her home in London during the spring of 2009 as she battled her demons. Produced by Salaam Remi.

At SCP think this will be a fantastic tribute to the talented singer and songwriter who died so suddenly back on the 23rd July. With respect Amy.

Pete's Pop Pick's

ParachuteWhat I Know

Back in August we at SCP introduced Parachute, one of the most talented singer songwriter bands to come out of the states in recent years. Kiss Me Slowly was their single release at the time, a song which was co-written with current country ‘it’ band Lady Antebellum. Now Parachute are back with their most powerful single, and lead from their new album The Way It Was. Featuring some phenomenal vocals What I Know stirs your soul – especially when they’re pleading “and i’m oooooooonnn my knees!”.  Currently on tour in the States with Kate Voegele, Parachute deserves a lot more recognition for the amazing musicians they are. What I Know is a brilliant single that you can listen to over & over again and is deserving of Pete’s Pop Pick of the week!

Honor Society – Living A Lie

Hmm might we developing a theme in this week’s Pete’s Pop Picks? Maybe the next band reviewed will be just 3 hot guys? Well with a ripper pop single like Living A LieHonor Society definitely deserve to be one of my Pop Picks this week. In the style of the Jonas Brothers, who they toured with in 2009, this pop rock band from New York formed in 2006 and have just released their third album A Tale Of Risky Business Part II. Gaining popularity after being MTV Buzzworthy in August, their new single has gained them additional exposure around the world – no video yet but have a listed to Living A Lie below!

Mario Lopez – I Can’t Stand It

Before you get all excited that hunky Mario Lopez from Saved By The Bell & Dancing With The Stars has branched out and become a DJ, wait! This Mario Lopez is a 42 year old DJ from Hanover Germany otherwise known as Thomas Schatz who started DJ’ing in the Hannover circuit, mostly to finance his own sound equipment and to buy records. He’s now following in David Guetta’s lead and created this fantastic pop/dance single I Can’t Stand It.  Upbeat, catchy and featuring vocals from… well… we don’t know, but she’s good!  Have a listen below.

Introducing – The Ready Set

After hearing about The Ready Set here at SCP headquarters, it got us thinking. How many band out there consist of only one member? The only band we could think of was Owl City, fronted by Adam Young. But there’s another – The Ready Set! Fronted by the very talented (& cute) 21 year old Jordan Witzigreuter as the one and only member of the band. Jordan has been involved in music since learning the drums at age 10, playing in bands from age 14, before graduating to writing music & lyrics as a 16 year old. In 2008 he released his first album Tantrum Castle, and began touring, but it wasn’t until his second album I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming that he really started to get noticed. The main reason for this new found success was his first charting single from this album, Love Like Woe. This catchy pop anthem reached number 27 on the US charts, and really got The Ready Set noticed. The video was a lot of fun as well – check out Love Like Woe below.
Back with a new EP entitled Feel Good Now, and single, KillerThe Ready Set is preparing to hit the world stage. This 5 track EP continues the catchy indie pop that made him popular withLove Like Woe, especially with the new single Killer. A little bit Jason Mraz, a little bit Ed SheeranThe Ready Set really has his own unique style, fun, poppy and upbeat – and this shows in their YouTube album launch video sending up Melrose Place, with Jordan playing all band members roles!
The video is currently being made, but check out the new single Killer, out now on iTunes below!

New Video Alert - Beyonce - Party

At SCP we are finding it hard to keep up with the mum to be, with Beyonce dropping yet another video, this time for track Party. The sixth video from her hugely popular 4 album see was released as the album's third urban single in the United States on August 30 while previous video Countdown was serviced as the third US mainstream and third international single, on October 4. Confused yes, but we will continue!

Differing slightly from the album version that features Andre 3000 the remix, features American rapper J.Cole, with the mid tempo  beats  with elements of soul and funk, we can easily see our selves singing this hit on a summers day!

The video, directed by Beyonce herself, also see’s guest appearances from her sister Solange and also former band mate and bestie Kelly Rowland.

Check out the video below and let us know what you think?
4 is available on iTunes now

New Single Alert - The Fray – Heartbeat

Grey’s Anatomy has been responsible for two of the biggest smash singles over the past 5 years. Snow Patrols Chasing Cars rocketed to the top of the charts after appearing in one episode of the popular medical drama. The other song, How To Save A Life by The Fray. This song featured in 2 episodes of the second season, and again became a worldwide number one smash. They followed up a couple years later with You Found Me, another huge single for them but since then they’ve been largely off the music scene. Heartbeat marks their return, and it looks to be another pop/rock smash for The Fray. Displaying all their usual radio friendly traits, you will be hearing Heartbeat on the airwaves very soon! Heartbeat is available now on iTunes – stay tuned for the upcoming video!

New Video Alert – GroupLove – Tongue Tied

GroupLove is an American Indie group that was actually formed when the members met on the small island of Crete! They only formed in 2009, but have rapidly been gaining popularity in a short period of time, opening for Florence and the Machine in the US, and some gigs in the UK as well. Tongue Tied is their brand new single and it’s an awesome song – one that you get stuck in your head and sing the melody to yourself for days afterwards! Performing at Splendour In The Grass in Australia recently, GroupLove are getting themselves noticed big time, and with music like this, we at SCP think we’ll expect to see and hear a lot more of this talented band!

You all know SCP are huge fans of the awesome Kelly Rowland – from her work with Destiny’s Child to her solo classics like Work she can do no wrong. New Video Alert - Coldplay - Paradise

Quite simply, the brand new Paradise video from Coldplay is the story of an elephant (slash man in an elephant suit), escaping from captivity to ride a unicycle home to Africa… we're not joking. Check it out now! This is the second single from their album Mylo Xyloto which is available on iTunes.

Oh and coz we love ya check out the below album sampler.

Pete's Pop Picks

Ryan Adams - Lucky Now

Seemingly to always fly under the radar, Ryan Adams is one of the most talented singer-songwriters from the States. Having a successful solo career, as well as the best part of The CardinalsRyan has a huge international profile and is highly respected for his musical talents. He has just released his new album Ashes & Fire and Lucky Now is the first single and it’s amazing. This 36 year old really knows how to pen a folk pop ballad – stripped back, melodic and a song that gets into your soul, it’s the perfect lead single for his new album. Beautifully shot in black and white, the video for Lucky Now is released and this brilliant song is deserving of Pete’s Pop Pick of the week!

Nicole Scherzinger – Try With Me
First Nicole Scherzinger was telling us Don’t Hold Your Breath, then she got Wet – now she’s pleading Try With Me – yes the third single from Nicole’s album Killer Love is Try With Me, and it’s another solid effort. Starting off slowly, you think it’s a ballad but then Try With Me builds to a dance beat. The video shows her in a Mexican rainforest that has a little bit of an Avatar feel to it. Killer Love has had much more popularity than her debut solo effort, and Try With Me is actually leading a re-release of this album.

Sergey Lazarev – Electric Touch
Europe does pop in it’s own individual way – witness the Eurovision Song Contest as the perfect example! You can recognise a European pop song immediately from the structure and sounds used – and Electric Touch is no different. Sergey Lazarov is a super-star of pop in his native Russia, and is now branching out into English based pop where Electric Touch is his newest single. The best thing about this song is the video – great sets, choreography and lighting – check it out!

New Video Alert – Hot Chelle Rae – I Like It Like That

SCP featured review of the Hot Chelle Rae single Tonight Tonight in July – and sure enough it became a worldwide smash hit in August and September... we’re not saying it was anything to do with us but it’s good timing don’t you think? ;) Well the boys from Nashville are back with their all important follow-up single I Like It Like That and again it’s a fun up-tempo number perfect for the heights of the worldwide charts. Featuring  New Boyz who lent their talents for the rap, and taken from their up-coming album Whatever, this should be a sure-fire hit from the boys in the next couple of months...  as we reviewed it now of course!

New Album Alert – Maria Mena – Viktoria

In Norway, Maria Mena is one of the most popular pop stars in the country with every album release going to the top of the charts. Named after characters from West Side Story (her brother is Tony) Maria was destined to have a life in music. After her parents divorced at age 13, she turned to music as a form of  self soothing and penned the song My Lullaby from her diary. If her name sounds familiar to you, it should - Maria Mena had a worldwide smash hit with her single You’re The Only One. Familiarise yourself with this great song below:

Maria has just released her 5th studio album, Viktoria. An incredibly refined and tasteful album, Viktoria shows how much Maria has grown in the past 10 years since signing with Sony records. The lead single is Habits featuring Danish singer Mads Langer and it’s a very haunting single echoing the Gary Jules Mad World smash hit single. With the piano her instrument of choice, this whole album is filled Maria’s delicate vocals and beautiful ballads. Try this – in a darkened room, light some candles and lose yourself in Maria Mena’s Viktoria. You will understand. Viktoria is out now in iTunes.

Friday, 21 October 2011

At the SCP office today, the topic of conversation was he RETURN of the boy band! With The Wanted, JLS and even Take That blazing up the charts, are we back in a boy band era? We are thinking yes, as the UK is pumping out the fresh young boys quicker than Westlife being dropped and Syco unleashing new boy toys One Direction!

They are perhaps the most eagerly awaited UK X Factor act of all time. Teen magazines have been unprecedentedly barraged by fan-mail for months, TV studios mobbed by screaming girls and radio stations overwhelmed. With such a legion of adoring fans in rapture at the prospect of being finally in possession of their idols' work, One Direction's debut single surely cannot arrive quickly enough. We featured the boys a few months ago and reckon they will be heading to these shores very soon with there new track What Makes You Beautiful.

Dedicated to a girl who fails to appreciate her own beauty, What Makes You Beautiful is the perfect introduction to 1D's sound. Frenzied and peppered by hooky guitars, the single is a power pop juggernaut which sets the scene for the boys' forthcoming debut album beautifully.

Written and produced by contemporary pop wizards Savan Kotecha (Britney Spears, Usher), Rami Yacoub (Nicole Scherzinger, Pink) and Carl Falk (Taio Cruz) the song was recorded in LA early in 2011 and instantly became a band favourite, as well as obvious first single.

Harry says: "We're so excited to get the single finally out there. When we were recording in the studio we knew instantly that we wanted this track to be our first single".

Zayn adds: "I think the album is going to surprise a few people. It's very individual to us. We wanted to make sure that it was our sound."

One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful is the # 6 most added song to Australian radio this week and debuts at # 91 on the National Airplay chart.

One Direction are Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik. All five boys auditioned for the UK’s X Factor in 2010 as solo artists. However, at the suggestion of guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, they joined forces as a group, quickly becoming one of the competition's most popular acts of all time, finishing in the final three and garnering a gigantic fan-base along the way.

After wowing crowds across the country on The X Factor Live Tour across the UK, the boys signed to Syco Music and immediately set about recording their debut album with some of the world's most sort-after producers. The results of which will be heard in 2012. Check out the boys below!

Westlife set to split!

You read correctly! Westlife are splitting up after 14 years together! In the official press release the Irish boys states that the split is amicable and just wish to have a well earned break and pursue new ventures. The boys will be releasing a Greatest Hits on 25th November, with a new single Lighthouse due on 7th November. The boys will also be doing a farewell tour in their 15th year together to say goodbye to their fans!

The band said: “It’s almost hard to believe that we’ve been doing this for as long as we have. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and are looking forward to releasing our Greatest Hits as a special thank you to our fans who have supported us throughout our career.”

Here’s the official press release…

After 14 years, 26 top ten hits including 14 number one singles, 11 top 5 albums, 7 of which hit the top spot and have collectively sold over 44 million copies around the world, 10 sell out tours and countless memories that we will forever cherish, we today announce our plan to go our separate ways after a greatest hits collection this Christmas and a farewell UK tour next year.  The decision is entirely amicable and after spending all of our adult life together so far, we want to have a well-earned break and look at new ventures.  We see the greatest hits collection and the farewell tour as the perfect way to celebrate our incredible career along with our fans. We are really looking forward to getting out on the tour and seeing our fans one last time.
Over the years Westlife has become so much more to us than just a band.  Westlife are a family.  We would like to thank our fans who have been with us on this amazing journey and are part of our family too.

We never imagined when we started out in 1998 that 14 years later we would still be recording, touring and having hits together.  It has been a dream come true for all of us.

Kian, Mark, Nicky and Shane

Well boys, though we at SCP have not been dedicated fans we salute you. You have outlasted many rival bands, sold millions of records and melted many girls and boys hearts along the way with your Irish charm and pop hits. Lets look back at in the boys pop vault.

New Video Alert - Rihanna - We Found Love

Rihanna has dropped her video for her new single We Found Love which  is currently sitting at number 1 in the iTunes chart. The video directed by Melina Matsoukas, starts with a monologue about love saying "It's like you're screaming but no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important, that without them, you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, like nothing can save you. And when it's over and it's gone, you almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back so you can have the good”

Throughout the video we see scenes of Rihanna and bad boy lover ( former boxer Dudley O'Shaughnessy) go through the ups and downs of relationships, from love and fun to hate and fights. Even Rihanna tweeted "We’ve never done a video like this before. This is probably one of the deepest videos I’ve ever done ... its all about love and love being like a drug, you definitely get that from this."

The song is taken from RiRi sixth studio album Talk That Talk and features singer-songwriter, DJ, producer Calvin Harris. We Found Love  is available on iTunes now!

Steps return to top of UK charts!

Now if you are addicted to Steps Reunion reality TV show like SCP are, you would know that the band were back in the studio recording ABBA’s Dancing Queen to accompany their new The Ultimate Collection album! Well after ten years since they split Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer, and Ian "H" Watkins have secured the No.1 position in the UK album charts at the weekend.
Returning to the top of the charts with their Ultimate Collection, all five members of the UK version of ABBA pop group have hit social networking site Twitter to express their excitement about returning to the charts with Claire saying 'Well what can I say? Steps fans are officially the best fans anyone has ever had!
continuing saying 'Who on earth would have thought 10 yrs on we would be No 1 again...? You are amazing and we appreciate what you've done for us so so much!! Bring on the Tour Steppers. We're gonna Pop it!!!! Xx'

Yes, the Steps bandwagon is back on the road next April with a full on reunion tour, tickets are on sale now and bound to sell out with Tragedy fans like us, wishing to reclaim their youth and singing....

When the feeling's gone and you can't go on
It's tragedy
When the morning cries
And you don't know why
It's hard to bear
With no one to love you
You're going nowhere

Here's the full version...
Well congrats Steps. We downloaded the album and it will be our Friday soundtrack this week at the SCP office! A fitting end to what was a pop phenomenon of the 90’s. We were sad when you ended and glad you are putting your differences behind you, to end on a high! Lets hope the grown men dancing to Steps dancing routines will not return though!

Lets look back at what made them great!
Yes we still love them! Shhhhhh!

New Video Alert – Todrick Hall (& Celebrities) – It Gets Better

Most of the time when we feature a new song or video at SCP it’s to help bring a great newly released pop song to the world’s attention.

This song is a different story.

With this song we are hoping that people will listen to the message and realise the message that’s so entwined with the song. Todrick Hall is an ex American Idol contestant who wrote and sung It Gets Better in order to bring attention to youth suicide, especially within the Gay & Lesbian community. When he’s singing this song you can see how much it means to him – the courage and conviction in his voice comes through in a really great pop song. It also means a lot  to some big name celebrities as well as the video features guest messages from Jewel, Glee’s Chris Colfer, Zachary Quinto, Perez Hilton, Jason DeRulo, Neil Patrick Harris, Anne Hathaway and the one & only Ellen DeGeneres. Have a listen to this song – and please post a link to this on your own Facebook or Twitter page – help get the message out... that It Gets Better.
